#ThinkLanguages FAQs

#ThinkLanguages is an event for TY students to celebrate and learn about all the benefits of foreign language skills. Languages Connect supports teachers and students to bring languages to life in their schools by holding local events as part of a national celebration. The school-run events include a virtual opening ceremony, interactive quiz, online and live workshops, competitions and activities provided by Languages Connect paired with an opportunity for schools to host local speakers, student-led workshops and lots more.

Registration for #ThinkLanguages 2022 closes on Friday 30 September. Registration forms must be fully filled out and may be accepted on a first come, first served basis in the case that we reach capacity.

Take the time to check out the #ThinkLanguages page on the Languages Connect website and watch some of the videos from previous years. You need to fill in all your details and submit the registration form by Friday 30 September.

Organise a Champion Team of students who will lead the rest of Transition Year in experiencing and understanding how learning foreign languages can have a real-life impact socially, culturally and professionally.

Champion Team Handbooks and posters will be arriving in all registered schools in early October to help plan and promote your event in the school and wider community. These handbooks give you a step-by-step guide to plan and implement a successful, inclusive, and fun event.

Your students can plan the day in whatever way suits your school. Why not ask a student who is a native speaker of another language to do a beginner’s language class, or reach out to the wider local community and invite speakers to give talks on how languages have played a role in their lives? Your Champion Team can also check out the pre-recorded workshop summaries and choose a selection which will be of interest to your TY group.

This is totally up to you and your school! #ThinkLanguages can be as big or as small an event as you want it to be depending on your individual school context. We suggest dedicating a full day to celebrating foreign languages but you can choose a model which works best for your students.

When planning, use our support materials, check in with our dedicated Facebook group and give yourself plenty of time for brainstorming, deciding on event content and preparing for the big day.

#ThinkLanguages is an event for Transition Year students in registered post-primary schools. The resources we supply, and the live workshop facilitators sent out to schools, will only be provided for TY students.

#ThinkLanguages will take place nationally on Thursday 17 November and all pre-recorded workshops, interactive quiz and opening ceremony will be available for this date. We want TY students across the country to celebrate together on the same day to create a national buzz around language learning. However, if your TY students are not available on this date you can host your event on a later date as access to the online workshops will still be available to registered schools.

Supports (e.g. online workshops and Opening Ceremony) will be available from 17 November to 21 December. We would encourage all participating  schools to organise their events during this date range.

Yes, Languages Connect will provide online support and event management kits including Student and Teacher Guides, posters and promotional material for the day.

A mix of supports including pre-recorded opening ceremony, interactive quiz and online workshops, and the chance to have a live workshop at your school will also be made available to registered schools.

Yes, we will have some material, including promotional posters, available in Irish. #SmaoinighArTheangacha

#ThinkLanguages is a national Irish event, supported by Languages Connect, which engages TY students. Registered participants for #ThinkLanguages receive planning guides, support materials and resources for planning their local event.

If you invite guest speakers and explain you are organising a school event, they may be happy to take part without charging a fee.

Languages Connect will be sending live workshop facilitators to some registered schools and will cover this cost. Unfortunately, only the cost of allocated live workshops can be covered by Languages Connect – if you organise a workshop directly, you will be liable for any fees required.

We suggest keeping the workshops to 30 minutes to help you coordinate your day with the recorded workshops which are all 30 minutes long. This will keep all the students interested and give the opportunity to explore many different languages.
