Transition year
#ThinkLanguages
Transition Year is a great time to start new things and learn a new language! Our annual #ThinkLanguages TY Event gives students the opportunity to experience many elements of foreign language and culture outside the classroom. Languages are brought to life through interactive workshops, interesting guest speakers, fun competitions, food tasting and the chance to meet exhibitors. Learn a new language
Transition Year is an ideal time for students to explore new languages and cultures and to develop greater awareness of the value of language learning for personal, educational and future career opportunities.
We support schools by offering a provision of teachers to deliver language modules during Transition Year, giving students the opportunity to experience a wider range of languages in an engaging way. These modules aim to spark curiosity, build confidence and support more informed language choices for Senior Cycle.
Currently available TY language modules include:
• Japanese
• Lithuanian
• Mandarin Chinese
• Polish
• Portuguese
• Russian
Provision of individual language modules is subject to teacher availability.
If your school would like to offer a TY language module that is not currently available, or interested in diversifying language provision, please contact us to discuss available supports.
Try Teaching Primary Pupils some languages!
One successful project has been the teaching of a foreign language in a Primary School. TY students design, plan and deliver a lesson or series of lessons for primary school schools in the language that they have been taught.
Here is a video of TY students in Coláiste Bhríde in Carnew, Co. Wicklow embarking on a project to teach French to 5th and 6th class in their local primary school.
