Languages Connect Interim Review Report
Minister Foley publishes Languages Connect Interim Review Report and Implementation Plan to 2026
Minister for Education Norma Foley TD has published the Interim Review Report and Implementation Plan to 2026 for Languages Connect – Ireland’s National Strategy for Foreign Languages in Education 2017 – 2026.
The review is a milestone of the Strategy, which envisions Ireland’s education system as promoting a society where the ability to learn and use at least one foreign language is taken for granted , because of its inherent value for individuals, society and the economy. The review celebrates the key achievements of the Strategy to date, and outlines the next steps for the remainder of its term.
Minister Foley said: “Language is one of the key means by which we think, express our thoughts, communicate and connect with others. […] Since the Languages Connect Strategy was introduced in 2017, it has guided significant progress in the teaching and learning of foreign languages in Ireland […]”
Some key achievements outlined in the report include the introduction of Lithuanian, Mandarin Chinese, Polish at Portuguese as curricular languages for the Leaving Certificate; the roll out of the Say Yes to Languages sampler module at primary level; and the successes of the Languages Connect awareness-raising campaign and its flagship project #ThinkLanguages.
We look forward to continuing to support the Department with the implementation of key actions in this strategy.
