10 schools will be awarded €15,000 each to cover identified needs. This will be €5,000 per year over 3 consecutive years, to be paid at the beginning of each year. All DES recognised post-primary schools are eligible to apply. Schools are responsible for establishing their own partner schools in a country where the target language is spoken. The deadline for the last round of applications was Friday the 12th of April 2019.
Applicants should expect to be informed on the status of their application by Friday the 31st of May 2019.
MFL Teacher Language Upskilling Scheme
Funding for MFL Teacher Language Upskilling Scheme : Additional funding has been allocated to MFL Teacher Language Upskilling Scheme aimed at MFL Teachers qualified in a language they are NOT teaching or are not teaching to full capacity. The school needs to commit to introducing / expanding the target language the MFL Teacher wishes to upskill in.
The MFL Teacher Upskilling Scheme was developed under ‘Languages Connect’ strategy to draw out the existing, unused ‘dormant’ language capacity in our schools. The scheme was aimed at languages teachers qualified in a language they are not teaching or are not teaching to full capacity. The idea was that with upskilling these teachers could get equipped to teach a language again after a period of not teaching it, or that they would be able to expand their teaching of the new language, perhaps moving from junior cycle teaching to senior cycle teaching. With upskilling, schools are able to expand their capacity in languages provision or add new languages that are available on the curriculum.

TY Work Experience & Languages
Post-Primary Languages Initiative (PPLI) is developing a TY activity pack ‘Working with languages’ students can use during the work experience.

Have you sometimes spare time during work experience?
The PPLI activity pack includes fun activities both in the target language learned in school and in English/Irish. No matter what the student’s level, everyone can use the activities to learn and reflect on work-related language and culture. The student chooses the activities they are interested in, at a level that is appropriate to them. There are four sections from which to choose activities, each section focusing on different aspects of the world of work such as language awareness, culture or work-related vocabulary.
The activities suit any workplace and any language. The pack will be available as a hardcopy which can be carried around, or activities can be downloaded on a needs basis.
The world of work has changed hugely in the last 20 years. Workplaces in Ireland are increasingly diverse – workers can be from a variety of different countries and speak languages other than English. When students are on their work placement, it is important for them to reflect on this diversity. As a future worker in Ireland, Europe or the wider world, the use of languages and the interaction with different nationalities and cultures in the workplace is going to become more common.
The National Skills Strategy 2025 lists foreign languages and cultural awareness among the cross-sectoral skills which improve an individual’s employability and enable occupational mobility.
PPLI TY activity pack ‘Working with languages’ will be available from September 2019.
